Pressbooks lets you create several book formats, including the following:
- Digital PDF
- EPUB
- Webbook
The first four formats in this list are all exportable files that can be downloaded to your device and/or uploaded to distribution services like Amazon or Lulu.
By comparison, the Pressbooks webbook is a website instead of a file. Webbooks can be accessed from any device with an internet connection at the unique URL an author has chosen for their book on their Pressbooks network. The website can display the same content as an ebook or print book, with some differences in style and structure to make it easier to navigate on the web.
For example, whereas your exported ebook and print files may have several pages of front matter to display the title page, copyright page, et cetera, in a webbook all of the details you added to the Book Information page will display on the front homepage. While ebooks and print books have several pages per chapter, a webbook will display all of the content of a chapter on one webpage and allow readers to scroll down to read the content.
Every book on Pressbooks can be made into a webbook, but it doesn't have to be as long as the Global Privacy Status is set to Private. You can view how your webbook will display by hovering over the title of your book in the top navigation bar and clicking Visit Book. The book displays as a website with a homepage that may include your book's cover, as well as any metadata and book information you've added.
It also has a built-in table of contents. Each chapter in your book displays as its own web page.
Pressbooks webbooks are meant to be freely accessible to the public. It is possible to apply an All Rights Reserved license or add Buy options to your book, but please note that Pressbooks does not offer any features to monetize access to your public or private webbooks.
NOTE: Your webbook can only be made public on Pressbooks.com if you upgrade your book to any Pro Plan. Once you've upgraded, you'll find the Global Privacy Setting at the top of the Organize page. You can also find it by going to Settings Sharing & Privacy from the left sidebar menu. If you do not want your webbook to be available for free to the public, ensure that the Global Privacy is set to Private.
